THE UNKNOWN KIN
It was already lunch when Amelia entered my room. I was busy reading False Cargo and Submarine that time, so I didn't notice her right away.
"Lynette, have your lunch.", she said.
I looked at her. How can she expect me to go down, meet my Grandpa and have a lunch with him with this kind of situation? Pah.
"Did you hear me, Lynette?", she said impatiently, but not in an irritated tone.
I didn't respond. I closed the book soundly and went rebelling with the only woman who is loving me.
"Be prepared.", I heard her say while I'm taking the downward steps.
I don't know what she meant. I continued my walk to the dining area . I opened the door and took a 180-degree view.
Hell, is this what she meant?
A girl. No, a woman. Nah, a lady, perhaps.
And, a very, good-looking man.
I stood like a statue in shocked. Who are they?
"Lynette van Dross.", the man said in his smooth voice.
I stared at him. Then I blinked. Dog, I don't know what to do when a handsome man said your name with full love and respect.
"Nate.", the lady said. The man she called Nate sat down on her side. I wonder if they are a married couple.
"Lynette, do sit here on my right.", Grandpa commanded, I obeyed.
I gazed at the two strangers. I don't know them. They are not familiar.
"Lynette?", the lady asked.
This is it! I have to made an impression! All I have to do is to act as a lady, show it to Grandpa and bingo! Goodbye Lady Eve Academy!
"Yes, ma'am?", I asked and gave her a soft smile.
"Too polite, dear.", she said. My smile froze on my face. Damn.
"Excuse me?", I asked, controlling my temper.
"I'm Nathalie Ashford.", she introduced herself.
"Oh. It was nice to", I can't say meet. I added, "know your name, Nathalie."
"And I am Nathaniel Ashford.", the man said.
"Lynette van Dross.", I whispered.
"So, you are really Emily's daughter? You are so pretty. Singer?", Nathalie asked.
"Mostly of Religious songs. I've never heard minstrels singing since Grandpa-"
"The lunch is here. Do enjoy, Nathalie and Nate.", grandfather interrupted.
"Is that a good idea, Grandpa? Cutting someone who was talking to her guests? I thought you want me to be a perfect lady?", I asked. Dog, I lost my temper somewhere.
"Or you just don't want them to know that you are locking your granddaughter here for 5 years?!", I shouted.
The two strangers seemed to be good listeners, so their faces turned amazed when they heard me.
"Lynette!", Grandpa shouted back at me. He's enjoying this fight.
" I am doing this for your sake!", he added.
"Calm down, Lynette.", Nathalie said.
"And who are you to command me? I only knew your name!", I cried. She's irritating me. I can feel the blood rushing on our own faces now.
"Hey, both of you, calm down!", Nathaniel yelled. I threw a killer look at him. But I obeyed him.
"Who are they, Grandpa?!", I asked.
"They are family.", he answered.
I stared at him. This is not the time for him to tell jokes. Family?
"Your grandfather and my grandfather are brothers. They're twins.", Nathaniel explained calmly.
I didn't respond. I'm so surprised that I'm not even looking anywhere. My eyes were close.
"You never mentioned anything about them.", I asked. My eyes were still closed.
No one answered. I opened my eyes. Grandpa was speechless.
"You're my second cousin?", I asked, Nathalie first.
"No. I am your Aunt.", she answered. She also gave me a warm smile.
"I am.", Nathaniel said.
I can't believe it. For 15 years, no one told me that I have an Aunt and a second cousin. What the effing thing was happening?
MY head was spinning with so much thoughts. I stood up from my seat and ran to the nearest exit, which was going to the library.
I ran as fast as I could. I heard Nathaniel as he told the two folks to stay put and he will follow me. When I reached the exit door, I instantly pulled the knob, went to the other side of the room (which was the GIGANTIC library), and locked it with the knob. I ran to the opposite door and also locked it.
I'm alone. At last.
I sat on the table, forgetting about etiquette. I looked at the window. I can see my reflection. I looked like a ragged doll. Suddenly, I felt the hunger that I resisted when I was on the dining area. I immediately ran and opened the window. I jumped as high as I could until my base was on the window, then I set my feet on the ground of the garden. I'm free.
This is the outside world I only knew. Grandpa, since my parents died, did not allow me to get out of his territory (?). He was too scared of the possibilities that can move me away from him. I, in fact, took my middle school inside this house. I can't remember how the city looked like before. I don't even know how to interact with normal people. Grandfather, Amelia, some maids and Mike the driver, are the only people that I'd talked to since that accident.
I know. You did not have to tell me. I'm pitiful, cause I'm a freaking idiot.
I walked to the center of the garden. I sat on the cream-painted bench. I took a 90-degree view of the Red Rose Garden, This was made for my grandmother, Lady Antoinette Rose van Dross, founder of Rose Institute of Graceful Ice Skaters. I missed her. Terribly.
I'm so tired. I'm hungry. I feel dizzy. I want to sleep. Yes. Sleep is the answer. Just a short nap. Please, let me sleep.
I rested my back on the circular column of the shed. I inhaled the fresh oxygen from the roses and exhaled all my worries. After a minute or so of relaxation, I finally found peace.
"Lynette. Sleep and grow."
That was the angelic voice of my mom! I missed her. So much. I want to hear her voice again, please. Mom, speak.
"Lynette.", she repeated.
It felt good. Very good.
